Nautica was founded by David Chu in 1983 as a water-inspired global lifestyle brand. While the brand's intent was to market toward the upper middle class, boat-owning prep crowd, Nautica found its way into hip-hop culture. Along with brands like Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica had a type of aspirational American look that the popular rappers of the ’90s loved to flip on its head. Oversized versions of Nautica sweaters and outerwear found their way into many music videos from the era. In an homage to that era of success, Nautica has recently collaborated with rapper Lil Yachty.
