Salvatore Ferragamo

Salvatore Ferragamo started his career as an apprentice to a shoemaker in his hometown of Bonito, Italy in the early-1900s. After his apprenticeship ended, he opened a small repair and made-to-measure shop in Bonito and eventually moved it to Santa Barbara, California. His next move, opening the Hollywood Boot Shop in 1923, would prove fruitful in the long term as many celebrities became regulars at the store. After over a decade in America, Salvatore returned to Italy in 1927 and opened the Salvatore Ferragamo company in Florence where he would focus on women’s footwear. Although the company would find much success in the women’s footwear market, Ferragamo didn’t expand into men’s clothing and footwear until the 1970s. These days, Ferragamo is best known in the menswear world for its belts, shoes and ties.
