The brand made athletic wear from the start but really found its market in the 1990s with the emergence of its satin jackets, commonly referred to as “Starter jackets”. Popularized by celebrities like Eddie Murphy and with special help from commercials starring DJ Jazzy Jeff, the jackets were a status symbol in the 1990s; the outerwear equivalent to the latest Air Jordans. While the jackets are not as ubiquitous as they were 30 years ago, Starter is still around churning out quality sportswear.
